A: Beyond the Harvest is a community awareness campaign created by Medical Assisting HOSA members at Kofa High School to educate the public about the health and environmental impacts of pesticide exposure in agricultural communities.
A: The name represents looking past the crops and fields: focusing instead on the lives, health, and stories of the people who make Yuma’s harvest possible
A: We launched the campaign as part of the HOSA Community Awareness division to raise awareness about an issue that deeply affects our local area: the health of farmworkers and families exposed to pesticides. Our goal is to protect, inform, and inspire action within our community.
A: We host educational booths, school presentations, safety workshops, and community outreach activities highlighting health, environmental safety, and local farmworker appreciation.
A: Pesticides are chemicals used to prevent or control pests that harm crops. They help protect food supplies but can be harmful if not handled or applied safely.
A: Exposure can cause headaches, dizziness, skin irritation, breathing problems, or nausea. Long-term exposure has been linked to more serious health conditions.
A: By wearing protective gear, washing hands and clothes after work, avoiding recently sprayed areas, and properly cleaning fruits and vegetables before eating.
A: Yuma is one of the largest agricultural regions in the U.S., meaning many families live or work near fields. Awareness helps prevent illness and encourages safer farming practices.
A: HOSA–Future Health Professionals is an international organization that prepares students for careers in health care through leadership, service, and competition.
A: It’s a HOSA competition where teams research a public health issue, build an awareness campaign, and share their results to educate their community.
A: Because it directly affects the health of our local agricultural community and connects to HOSA’s goal of promoting community health education.
A: We hope to educate families, spark safer habits, and inspire others to take part in protecting the health of those who feed our community.
